These are proving to be difficult times for Music. The legend of Ghazal, Mehdi Hassan who mesmerized generations in the subcontinent with gems like ‘Patta Patta Buta Buta’ and ‘Ranjish hi Sahi’ passed away in Karachi, Pakistan after battling illness for years. He was 84.
Born to a family of musicians in Rajasthan, Mehdi migrated to Pakistan after the partition in 1947. He began his career as a Thumri singer and slowly transition to ghazal singing, eventually becoming one of the most famous maestro of Ghazal rendition. So much so that the chronology of Ghazal came to be defined as pre-Mehdi era and post-Mehdi era.
Highly decorated in both India and Pakistan, his was once called the ‘voice of God’ by Lata Mangeshkar. Such was the power of this voice that it could envelope one’s mind and make him feel the pain of love just like that. This voice is now gone forever.
After the death of Jagjit Singh, now the demise of Mehdi Hassan is a great loss for the Music fraternity. However he will remain immortal for his timeless melodies on which we have grown up. My heartfelt respect to him.
